Eco Tierra Mojada
Organic orchad & harvesting β’ Day 6
At Diego and RocΓoβs farm we will get down to work with these great regional organic farmers, and touch the wet earth with our hands to harvest seasonal fruits and vegetables.
Eco-Tierra Mojada is a family-run agricultural company, run by Diego GonzΓ‘lez Roiz, with the experience of several generations of women and men passionately dedicated to growing fruits and vegetables using traditional and certified organic methods, respecting the balance of the environment, the life of the soil and the quality of the water. Its main settlement is in a small valley in the Cantabrian municipality of MaoΓ±o, Santa Cruz de Bezana. It is a pioneering vegetable plantation in French-style which offers direct sales. They have been awarded the prize for best organic producer in the fifth edition of the βAlimentos de Cantabriaβ awards.
Diego will give us an interesting talk about organic farming, which he and his family have been practising for generations. We will have the opportunity to learn from him in his garden the best kept secrets about this way of farming.
After getting to know the farm and its secrets, we will get down to work and pick our own seasonal fruits and vegetables, and we will be able to take home a basket of fresh produce straight from the soil: lettuce, spinach, leeks, spring onions, etc....
Las BraΓ±as de Pendes
Artisan cheese factory and livestock farm β’ Day 8
Cheeses have been made in the LiΓ©bana valley from as far back as the 10th century AD. Even then, the monks of Santo Toribio, traded them for other products.
The visit to the cheese factory encompasses the following site:
The chestnut grove of El Habario. It is 500 metres from the cheese factory. A place full of nature and history. A field with centenary chestnut trees, some of which measure up to 12 metres in circumference. It has been prepared for relaxation and activities. In the last fortnight of June, the chestnut trees are in bloom and form a an extremely beautiful natural landscape. At the end of October, the chestnuts fall from the tree and can be picked up off the ground. When the road was being built in this area of El Habario, a Palaeolithic site was discovered, a quarry, with its stones. There are no visible remains there.
El Corral de los Moros. One kilometre east of El Habario is this unique viewpoint in the area. There are remains of a medieval defensive enclosure. What makes it worth visiting are the views of the gorge, the Picos and the LiΓ©bana Valley that can be admired from here.
On the way back, a detour of one kilometre takes you to the village of Colio. It is worth visiting the Canchal de Hormas - the little devils of Colio -, seeing the emblazoned houses and the remains of the old cavalry, which is being converted into a mountain and mountaineering museum.
Not far from Tama, on the same road, you will find the Interpretation Centre of the Picos de Europa National Park, and three kilometres from Tama, on the way to Santander, you can visit a 10th century church: Santa MarΓa de LebeΓ±a, a jewel of pre-Romanesque art.
